About Department of Emergency Management

What We Do

Emergency Management is the managerial function charged with creating the framework by which the City strives to reduce vulnerability to threats/hazards and cope with disasters.  The mission of the City of Laurel's Department of Emergency Management is to develop, implement, train, test, and maintain plans, procedures, and skills to ensure our City, our staff, and our residents are capable of mitigating against, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from all threats and hazards, including natural and man-made disasters.

As part of our complex daily activities, the Department of Emergency Management:

  • Develops emergency plans and procedures;
  • Manages the City's Emergency Operations Center to support on-scene response and recovery efforts during activations for emergencies and special events;
  • Participates in community outreach and facilitates training opportunities that enhance City-wide preparedness for our residents and City personnel;
  • Maintains emergency response equipment, including the City's Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program;
  • Disseminates emergency notifications, alerts, and information during emergencies; and
  • Oversees the City's flood mitigation program and Community Rating System (CRS).
