Special Exception

Uses which are permitted under specific circumstances and contingent on analysis and review from staff and the Planning Commission. Some uses, while limited to certain zoning districts, are only permitted by special exception throughout the City. Examples include houses of worship, automobile uses, liquor stores, carryout and fast food restaurants, rental halls, and telecommunications facilities. The criteria by which special exceptions are judged are located in Section 20-21.1 and Section 20-22 of the Land Development Code.

Approved by: Board of Appeals (after a recommendation from the Planning Commission).

Fee Schedule: Fees vary depending on the specific use, but generally range from $1,300 to $5,600.

***On December 9, 2024 the Mayor and City Council of Laurel adopted a Resolution for a moratorium oDone Editingn acceptance and processing of zoning requests, special exception requests and text amendments which will be starting January 2, 2025 through October 31, 2025, until the adoption of the new Master Plan and Comprehensive Rezoning Plan. ***Furthermore, the Board of Appeals will not be meeting in November of 2025 due to the Holidays within the month conflicting with the meeting schedule for the City.
